This brake shoe set is a high-quality replacement for classic aircooled Volkswagen drum brake systems, supplying a full set of four shoes to complete one axle (left and right sides, two drums). Designed primarily for Beetle applications, these shoes are also widely used across other VW and Porsche models sharing similar drum brake setups.

Brake shoes are a key component of the drum braking system. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure forces the shoes outward against the inside of the brake drum, creating friction to slow and stop the vehicle. Over time, the friction material wears down, reducing braking efficiency and increasing stopping distances, making regular replacement essential for safety and performance.

These shoes measure 40mm wide by 230mm long and are correct for front fitment on most Beetles from August 1964 onwards (excluding 1302 and 1303 models which use different front shoes). They are also used on the rear of all Beetles from December 1967 onwards, including 1302 and 1303 models, as well as Karmann Ghia rear applications and certain Porsche models using compatible drum brake systems.

When fitting to the rear, these shoes are supplied without handbrake levers attached. You will need to transfer your original levers or purchase new components. Required fitting parts include handbrake lever pins, clips and washers (211609601B, N0122283, 211609619). Replacement handbrake levers are also available (113609613A left and 113609614A right).

For best results, we recommend inspecting or replacing brake drums, wheel cylinders, springs and fitting kits at the same time to ensure even braking performance and longevity.

The wheel cylinder is a key part of the drum brake system. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder forces the pistons inside the wheel cylinder outward, pushing the brake shoes against the drum to create friction and slow the vehicle. When the pedal is released, pressure drops and the shoes retract.
