Beetle Rear Wheel Cylinder -1968-79

Replacement rear wheel cylinder designed for later aircooled Volkswagen models. This unit features a 17mm bore, providing the correct hydraulic balance for rear drum brake systems on these vehicles.

The wheel cylinder is a key part of the drum brake system. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder forces the pistons inside the wheel cylinder outward, pushing the brake shoes against the drum to create friction and slow the vehicle. When the pedal is released, pressure drops and the shoes retract.

Over time, wheel cylinders can suffer from internal corrosion, worn seals, or fluid leaks, leading to reduced braking performance, uneven braking, or brake fluid contamination of the shoes. Replacing a worn cylinder restores proper braking function and safety.

This cylinder is designed for rear axle fitment and fits both left (passenger side) and right (driver side).

Sold individually – 2 required per vehicle.

Fits:
VW Beetle 1968-1979
VW Karmann Ghia 1968-1974
VW Trekker (Type 181) 1973-1983 – IRS suspension models only

Other parts you may need: brake shoes, fitting kit (springs & clips), brake hoses, master cylinder, and brake fluid. It is recommended to replace wheel cylinders in pairs for even braking performance.
