Type 1 Con Rod Bearing Set (Also Waterboxer Engines)

This high-quality connecting rod (con rod) bearing set is designed for a wide range of Volkswagen engines, covering both classic aircooled Type 1 units and later Waterboxer engines. Manufactured by premium OEM suppliers such as Kolbenschmidt or Mahle, these bearings are built to deliver reliable performance and long engine life.

Con rod bearings sit between the crankshaft journals and the connecting rods, forming a critical part of the engine’s rotating assembly. Their job is to provide a smooth, low-friction surface that allows the crankshaft to rotate freely while supporting the load of the pistons and combustion forces. Properly functioning bearings are essential for maintaining oil pressure, preventing metal-to-metal contact, and ensuring quiet, efficient engine operation.

During engine rebuilds, these bearings are always replaced, especially if the crankshaft has been reground. This set is available in multiple oversizes to suit crankshafts that have been machined, ensuring correct oil clearance and long-term reliability.

Sizes Available (Select as Required)

  • Standard
  • 0.25mm Oversize
  • 0.50mm Oversize
  • 0.75mm Oversize
  • 1.00mm Oversize
  • 1.50mm Oversize

Correct size selection depends on crankshaft journal condition and machining history.

Fitting & Installation Notes

  • Supplied as a complete set of 8 bearing shells (for 1 engine / 4 con rods)
  • Must be matched to crankshaft journal size after measurement or machining
  • Always check oil clearances during assembly using Plastigauge or micrometer measurements
  • Crankshaft journals must be clean, smooth, and within tolerance before installation
  • Recommended to replace con rod bolts/nuts during rebuild for correct torque retention
  • Use assembly lube during installation to prevent dry start damage
  • Ensure correct bearing orientation and tang alignment when fitting
  • Torque settings must follow manufacturer specifications for your engine type
  • Ideal to replace alongside:
    • Main bearings
    • Thrust washers (where applicable)
    • Oil pump and seals
    • Full gasket set

Failure to correctly size or install bearings can result in low oil pressure, knocking noises, or catastrophic engine damage.
