Beetle Rear Brake Bundle Kit - 1968-79

Replacement set of brake shoes for use on the front of all Beetles from August 1964 to the end of production.

This excludes the 1302 and 1303 models which use different shoes on the front.

These shoes were also used on the rear of all Beetle (including the 1302 and 1303 models) from August 1967 onwards.

Also used on VW Trekkers that are fitted with IRS rear suspension.  This was originaly models from chassis number 183 2346 525 onwards.

Sold in sets of four to do both sides, left and right for one axle, 2 brake drums.

This rear brake drum is a high-quality replacement for classic Volkswagen models fitted with rear drum brakes and the 4×130 PCD stud pattern. Designed to original specifications, it delivers smooth, predictable braking and is ideal for routine maintenance, safety upgrades, or period-correct restorations.

What this brake drum does (and why it matters)

Rear brake drums provide the friction surface that the brake shoes act against to slow and stabilise the vehicle—especially important under load and during braking balance. Over time, drums can wear, glaze, or go out of round, which can cause:

• Reduced braking efficiency

• Pulling to one side under braking

• Noise or vibration

• Uneven shoe wear

Replacing worn drums restores proper contact, improves braking feel, and enhances overall safety.

How it works

When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic pressure forces the rear brake shoes outward against the inside of the drum. The friction generated slows the wheel. A true, clean drum surface is essential for even shoe contact and consistent braking performance.

Important fitting notes

• Although sold individually, we strongly recommend replacing rear brake drums in pairs to avoid uneven braking.

• Before installation, thoroughly clean the internal braking surface with a quality brake cleaner.

  • Drums are supplied with an anti-oxidising protective oil, which must be removed prior to fitting.

• While the drum is off, inspect:

  • Brake shoes

  • Wheel cylinders

  • Return springs and adjusters

  • Brake hoses

Addressing worn components at the same time ensures safe, balanced braking.
