Universal mechanical oil thermostat designed for use with external oil coolers and full flow oil systems on aircooled Volkswagen engines and other custom applications. This inline thermostat helps the engine oil reach operating temperature more quickly while protecting external oil coolers, filters, and oil lines from excessive cold oil pressure during startup.
The thermostat mounts inline between the engine and the external oil system components. When the oil is cold, the unit bypasses most of the oil flow directly back to the engine while still allowing a small amount of oil through the cooler circuit. This keeps oil circulating in the lines and helps eliminate dry starts.
Once the oil temperature reaches approximately 79°C (175-180°F), the thermostat progressively opens fully to allow unrestricted oil flow through the external oil cooler system.
This type of thermostat is highly recommended for full flow oil systems used in colder climates, especially during British winter conditions where overcooling can prevent the engine oil from reaching correct operating temperature.
Supplied complete with 3/8″ NPT hose barb fittings to suit 1/2″ oil hose along with hose clips for installation.
Ideal for performance engines, off-road vehicles, campers, and any aircooled VW fitted with an external oil cooling system.
