This replacement gear stick base bearing restores crisp, precise gear changes on classic Volkswagen models equipped with early manual gearboxes. Fitted at the bottom of the gear lever, this bearing supports the gear stick as it pivots, helping eliminate slop, play and vague shifts that develop over time as the original nylon bushing wears out.
Designed for Mk1 Golf 4-speed and 5-speed transmissions, Mk1 Golf Cabriolet, Caddy Mk1, early Scirocco and Jetta models, as well as Type 25/T3 buses using the early 12 mm gear shifter (commonly found on air-cooled and some diesel models). Vehicles using the later 14 mm T25 gear lever will require the alternative bearing version.
Once installed, this bearing significantly improves shift precision, reduces looseness in the gear lever and restores the positive feel expected from a well-maintained VW gearbox. It is an essential part when refurbishing the gear linkage or resolving sloppy gear engagement—especially on older vehicles that may have more frequent stop-start wear in the linkage system.
