Beetle Indicator Switch - 1972-79

Replacement indicator switch designed for later aircooled Volkswagen models fitted with column-mounted wiper switches. This unit features the correct 9-wire plug configuration, ensuring compatibility with the updated steering column electrical systems used from the early 1970s onwards.

The indicator switch is a key control component mounted on the steering column, allowing the driver to operate the left and right turn signals. Internally, it uses a series of electrical contacts that direct current to the indicator circuits when the stalk is moved. It also incorporates a self-cancelling mechanism, triggered by the steering wheel returning to centre after a turn, ensuring safe and automatic operation.

On these later models, the switch works in conjunction with the column-mounted wiper switch and often integrates additional functions such as headlight dip/main beam switching depending on vehicle specification. Over time, internal contacts can wear, leading to common faults such as intermittent indicators, no cancellation, or failure of main beam switching. Replacing the switch restores proper signalling function and electrical reliability.
