This M12x1.5 nut is used to secure the crankcase through studs that hold the two halves of the engine crankcase together on all Volkswagen Type 1 style engines. These nuts are critical to the structural integrity of the engine, as they clamp the crankcase halves together, ensuring correct bearing alignment, oil gallery sealing and overall engine strength.
The crankcase on an aircooled VW engine is made in two halves, and long through studs pass from one side of the engine to the other. These nuts are fitted to the ends of those studs and torqued to specification to hold the crankcase together. If these nuts are worn, damaged or incorrect, the crankcase may not seal correctly, which can lead to oil leaks, loss of oil pressure or engine damage.
These nuts are M12 x 1.5 thread with a 17mm spanner size (SW17). There are 6 required per engine, and they are sold individually, so a quantity of 6 is required for a full engine build.
These are commonly replaced during engine rebuilds, crankcase replacement, or when installing new case through studs.
