Type 1 Engine Case Washer

This 12mm thrust washer is used in multiple locations on classic Volkswagen vehicles, including rear shock absorber mounts, engine crankcase through studs and clutch cable installations. The washer spreads the load of the nut or bolt over a larger surface area, preventing damage to mounting points and ensuring components are clamped securely without pulling through the metal.

This washer measures approximately 12mm inner diameter, 22mm outer diameter and 3–4mm thickness, and is commonly used on Type 1 rear shock absorber mounts, engine case through studs on 1200–1600cc engines, and also on T25 clutch cable installations. Because these washers are load spreading washers, they are thicker and stronger than standard washers and are designed to handle suspension and engine load stress.

These are commonly missing during repairs or become worn or corroded over time, especially on rear suspension shock mounts where they are exposed to road dirt and water. It is good practice to replace these washers when replacing rear shock absorbers, clutch cables, or when rebuilding an engine where the case through studs are removed.
