Type 25 Starter Motor - 1983-92 - Waterboxer

This starter motor is a direct replacement for the unit fitted to Volkswagen Type 25 (T3) buses from 1983 onwards, covering both 1900cc and 2100cc engines. Designed specifically for manual gearbox models, it delivers reliable cranking power to ensure consistent starting in all conditions.

Rated at 12V and 0.95kW, this starter provides strong, dependable engagement with the flywheel, making it suitable for both aircooled and watercooled engine variants used in later Type 25 models. It is an ideal replacement for worn, tired or intermittent starters and is built for long service life.

How it works

The starter motor uses an electric solenoid to engage the pinion gear with the flywheel ring gear. Once engaged, the motor spins the engine fast enough for ignition to occur. A healthy starter is essential for reliable cold and hot starting, especially on higher-compression Waterboxer engines.

Important fitting notes

• For manual gearboxes only

• When fitting, a new starter motor bush must be installed in the gearbox

  • We recommend replacing this with starter bush part number 113301155

• If starting issues persist after fitting, check all wiring carefully

  • Most reported faults with new starters are caused by voltage drop from worn ignition switch wiring

  • Ensure all terminals are clean, tight and dry

  • Testing with a direct feed from the battery can help identify wiring-related faults

• If low-voltage issues remain, fitting a hard start relay (AC905351611) is strongly recommended
