Hard Start Relay - 12 Volt

This Hard Start Relay Kit is designed to revive and improve the starting performance of classic Volkswagen models by bypassing the heavy electrical load normally routed through the ignition switch. Over time, aging wiring and worn ignition contacts can lead to reduced voltage reaching the starter solenoid, causing weak or inconsistent starting.

By installing this relay, the high current needed for the starter motor is drawn directly from the battery, while the ignition switch merely triggers the relay. This reduces strain on the ignition system and ensures a strong, consistent electrical feed to the starter every time you turn the key.

The kit is equivalent to the Bosch WR1 relay, easy to install, and supplied with full fitting instructions. It can be mounted near the starter motor for best results.

This is one of the simplest and most effective upgrades for any aircooled VW, helping to eliminate common “hot start” problems, voltage drop, or starter hesitation—especially useful for vehicles with older wiring looms or upgraded starter motors.

Wiring Connections:

• 87 – Red wire to spade terminal on starter solenoid

• 87A – Not used

• 86 – Blue wire to ground

• 85 – Brown wire to starter solenoid red/black wire (ignition switch feed)

• 30 – Yellow wire to battery + terminal on starter solenoid

Fitting Notes:

• Mount relay close to the starter motor for best performance.

• Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before installation.

• Ensure transmission-to-body ground strap is secure and intact.
