These replacement crankshaft main bearing set are designed for early Waterboxer engines fitted to VW Type 25 / T3 buses from 1983 to 1985 that use the one-piece thrust bearing design. Supplied as a complete set of four bearings, it is suitable for engine rebuilds where maintaining correct crankshaft alignment and end-float is essential.
These bearings are specific to early WBX engines with a single-piece thrust bearing. Later engines use a different thrust arrangement.
Main bearings support the crankshaft within the engine case, allowing it to rotate smoothly while maintaining precise alignment. The thrust bearing controls crankshaft end-float, preventing excessive forward and backward movement caused by clutch operation and engine load.
Worn or incorrect bearings can lead to:
Low oil pressure
Crankshaft movement and end-float issues
Premature engine wear or failure
Replacing main bearings during a rebuild restores proper oil clearance, crankshaft stability, and long-term reliability.
The crankshaft runs on a thin film of pressurised oil between the journals and the bearing surfaces. The one-piece thrust bearing (the bearing with collars, located nearest the flywheel) absorbs axial loads from the clutch and drivetrain, while the remaining bearings support radial loads along the crankshaft.
Correct sizing is critical—this is why all reference measurements are taken from the thrust bearing with collars.
If measuring your existing bearings to confirm fitment, use the main thrust bearing for reference.
