This replacement O-ring seal is designed to fit the rear sump plate on Type 4 air-cooled engines, positioned near the oil filler and secured by two retaining bolts. It plays a vital role in sealing the rear sump plate to the engine case, preventing oil leaks and helping maintain correct oil pressure and cleanliness within the lubrication system.
With dimensions of 77mm x 4mm, this O-ring is manufactured from high-quality, oil-resistant rubber, ensuring long service life even when exposed to engine heat, vibration, and constant contact with oil. Over time, original seals can harden, flatten, or crack, leading to oil seepage or leaks around the sump plate area. Replacing the O-ring restores a secure, leak-free seal and helps keep your engine bay and underside clean.
This seal is suitable for Type 4 engines from 1700cc to 2000cc, as fitted to VW T2 Baywindow buses, early air-cooled VW T25 / T3 models, and the Porsche 914. It is an essential service item during oil system maintenance, sump plate removal, or engine rebuilds.
When fitting, ensure the sump plate and engine mating surfaces are clean and undamaged, and lightly oil the new O-ring before installation to prevent pinching. Always tighten the two sump plate bolts evenly to avoid distorting the plate or compromising the seal.
