**NCA** Splitscreen Bus Straight Axle Conversion Kit - With 1" Drop Spring Plates

This straight axle kit (aka Swing Axle Conversion) can be fitted to all Splitscreen Buses to allow you to remove the reduction boxes giving you better gearing to keep up with modern traffic.

Each kit allows you to fit a Beetle Swing Axle Gearbox into your Splitscreen Bus.

This kit includes the following parts:

  • Pair of Non adjustable Spring Plates with built in 1″ drop
  • Pair of Axle Tubes fitted with Rear Hub Carriers
  • Hand Brake Cable Conversion Tubes

PLEASE NOTE: Axle tubes in this kit are not painted and are supplied in raw steel.  Axle boots are also not included in the kit (picture is of axle tube supplied in Adjustable Straight Axle Conversion).

In order to install this kit you will require the following other parts:

  • Beetle Swing Axle Gearbox
  • Beetle Long Axle Drive Shafts (There are two styles available, 1967 Only versions which are 705mm long and 1968 to 1979 versions which are 720mm long.  Either style can be used as the difference between the two are the spline length where the brake drum slides onto).
  • Late Splitscreen Bus Nose Cone and Hockey Stick. (Note: Pre 1960 buses will need to use a fixed gearbox mount.)

By installing this kit it will automatically lower the rear end of your Splitscreen Bus.

Brakes

There are 4 options that you can use as your new rear brakes

Option 1 – Beetle Rear Brakes

You can install 1968 to 1979 Beetle rear brakes straight onto the Beetle axles but note that the stud pattern would be 4×130 PCD (4 Stud) so adapters would be required to install your Splitscreen Bus wheels which are 5×205 PCD (Wide 5).  You can install Pre 1967 Beetle Brake Drums which are 5×205 PCD (Wide 5) but you will require spacers on the axles which are available from Cool Air.  Cool Air also sell a modified rear brake drum which will fit straight onto the axle without spacers and is 5×205 PCD (Wide 5).  Please contact us for more details.

Option 2 – Type 3 Rear Brake Drums

You can install Type 3 5x205PCD (Wide 5) rear brake drums straight onto the Beetle Axles

Option 3 – CSP Disc Brake Conversion

Cool Air Sells a taylor made Rear Disc Brake Conversion that is designed to fit a Splitscreen bus with a Straght Axle Conversion.  Please Note however that your original Splitscreen bus Steel wheels can not be used with this kit.  Most Alloy wheels however can be used.  If in doubt then please contact us for advice.

Option 4 – Pre 1963 Modified Splitscreen Brake Drums

You can modify a Pre 1963 Splitsacreen Bus rear brake drum in order to fit onto the Beetle Axles.  The Rear lip will need machining off of the brake drum so that it slides into the Beetle rear backing plate and 3/4″ will need cutting off of the snout of the brake drum so that the rear axle nut can be installed.
