This front brake drum is a direct replacement for all Volkswagen 1302 and 1303 Beetles originally fitted with front drum brakes. Featuring the correct 4×130 stud pattern, it restores safe, consistent braking performance and is ideal for routine maintenance, refurbishment, or classic restoration work.

Manufactured to original specifications, this drum ensures proper shoe contact and braking balance when fitted correctly.

What this brake drum does (and why it matters)

The brake drum forms the friction surface that the brake shoes press against to slow and stop the vehicle. Over time, drums can become:

• Scored or worn

• Heat cracked

• Out-of-round

Replacing worn drums helps restore:

How it works

When the brake pedal is pressed, the wheel cylinder forces the brake shoes outward against the inside of the drum. The friction generated slows the rotation of the wheel. A smooth, correctly machined drum surface is essential for effective braking and even shoe wear.

Important fitting notes

• Although sold individually, we strongly recommend replacing brake drums in pairs to avoid uneven braking.

• Before installation, clean the inside braking surface thoroughly with brake cleaner.

  • Drums are coated at manufacture with an anti-oxidising oil, which must be removed before fitting.

• Always inspect related brake components (shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, and hoses) for wear or damage while the drum is removed.

This set of front brake shoes is a good quality replacement designed to fit the front brakes of VW 1302 and 1303 Beetles (Super Beetles) from 1971 to 1979. It can also be used on the rear axle of VW Type 3 models—including Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback—from 1966 through to the end of production in 1973, specifically on 4-stud models.

Supplied as a set of four shoes, this kit provides everything needed to service one axle (two brake drums)—left and right sides. The shoes measure 46mm in width by 250mm in length, matching factory specifications for a secure fit and optimal braking performance.

Ideal for restoration or maintenance of your classic VW, these shoes are precision-made to offer smooth braking, reduced noise, and consistent friction across the contact surface. When fitting, it’s recommended to inspect and, if necessary, replace springs, adjusters, and other brake hardware to ensure proper operation and safety.
