These EMPI performance oil shock absorbers are designed to bridge the gap between standard OE oil shocks and firmer gas shocks, offering improved control without sacrificing ride comfort. Specifically developed for lowered vehicles, these shocks feature modified travel to help prevent bottoming out – a common issue when fitting standard-length shocks to a lowered suspension setup.

With an operating range of 250mm to 370mm, these eye-to-eye shocks are ideal for a variety of classic aircooled Volkswagen applications, including rear suspension, link pin front suspension setups, and front applications on early VW buses. Their internal oil damping system provides smooth, progressive resistance, helping to control suspension movement, reduce bounce, and improve overall handling stability.

On lowered vehicles, correct shock length is critical. If a shock is too long, it can bottom out internally and become damaged; too short, and it can limit suspension travel and ride quality. These shortened EMPI shocks are engineered to maintain proper suspension movement, ensuring at least 2 inches of usable travel up and down from normal ride height when correctly matched to your setup.

Before installation, it is recommended to cycle (pump) the shock absorber a few times in the upright position. This helps remove any air bubbles that may have formed during storage, ensuring consistent damping performance once fitted.

Installation is straightforward for most aircooled VW applications, using standard eye-to-eye mounting points. However, when fitting to a Mk1 Caddy, an additional sleeve is required due to the smaller mounting bolt size compared to aircooled models.

For best results, always measure the distance between your shock mounting points with the vehicle resting on its wheels (not jacked up), then compare with the stated shock length to ensure correct fitment.
