This crankshaft installation kit is designed for building and assembling Type 1 based aircooled VW engines from 1200cc to 1600cc, as well as many larger performance engines based around a Type 1 crankcase. It provides the essential parts needed to prepare a crankshaft for installation into the crankcase, saving time during engine assembly and helping ensure all the correct drive and timing components are fitted together properly. This version also includes the distributor drive pinion.
The kit contains the distributor drive pinion, steel timing gear, timing gear woodruff key, brass distributor drive gear, crank lock ring, oil thrower and crankshaft pulley woodruff key. These parts work together to control valve timing, ignition drive and pulley location on the crankshaft. The timing gear drives the camshaft, the brass gear drives the distributor pinion, the woodruff keys locate the gears and pulley correctly, while the oil thrower helps reduce oil leakage behind the crank pulley. The lock ring secures the gear stack in place on the crankshaft.
This kit is ideal when rebuilding a stock 1200, 1300, 1500 or 1600 Type 1 engine, and is also suitable for many upgraded and performance T1-based engine builds. For installation, the gears normally need to be heated before fitting onto the crankshaft for the correct interference fit. Not suitable for 30hp or Type 4 engines.
You may also need main bearings, cam bearings, crankshaft shims, flywheel shims, crank seals, camshaft, lifters and a full engine gasket set when carrying out a complete engine build.
