200mm Custom Type 4 Flywheel (Fit Type 4 Engine In Type 1 Gearbox)

This forged and lightened flywheel is a purpose-designed upgrade for Volkswagen Type 4 air-cooled engines (1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc), allowing the use of a 200mm Type 1 clutch without compromising strength, drivability, or gearbox compatibility. It is ideal for engine conversions, performance upgrades, and drivetrain improvements in Baywindow and early Type 25 (T3) applications.

Unlike a standard Type 4 flywheel, this custom-modified unit allows the fitment of Type 1 200mm clutch assemblies, opening up a wide range of readily available standard and performance clutch options, including uprated friction discs and Kennedy pressure plates. This makes it an excellent choice for both road and performance builds where clutch availability and strength are important.

The flywheel is compatible with Type 1 gearboxes and Baywindow gearboxes up to 1975 without the need to clearance the gearbox bellhousing. It can also be used on late Baywindow models (1976–1979) and Type 25 / T3 models when fitting a high-performance 200mm clutch.

Manufactured from forged steel and weighing approximately 14.5 lbs, this flywheel retains a near-stock weight that suits heavier vehicles such as Buses, helping maintain smooth take-off, stable idle, and good low-speed drivability. While Beetle owners may prefer a lighter flywheel for quicker engine response, this balanced weight is ideal for Type 4-powered vans and conversions.

The flywheel is fitted with a 130-tooth ring gear, suitable for 12-volt starter motors.

Important Installation Note:
When fitting this flywheel to a Type 1 gearbox or a Baywindow 1600 gearbox, an additional needle bearing must be installed into the centre of the flywheel to support the gearbox input shaft.
