Passat B5 Front Brake Caliper (280mm Brake Discs) - Right (Lucus)

This replacement front brake caliper is designed for VW Passat (3B / B5) models built from August 1996 to November 2000, covering a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. It is manufactured specifically for vehicles equipped with the LUCAS braking system and is supplied for the front axle right, which on right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles is the driver side.

The caliper is a single-piston floating design with a 54mm piston, intended for use with vented front brake discs measuring 280mm diameter and 22mm thickness. The floating caliper construction allows the body to slide laterally on its guide pins, ensuring even pressure is applied to both brake pads during braking. This helps maintain consistent stopping performance and promotes even pad wear.

How it works

When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder pushes the 54mm piston outward inside the caliper. This forces the inner brake pad against the disc. As the caliper slides on its guides, the outer pad is pulled into contact at the same time, clamping the disc evenly from both sides. The friction created converts vehicle speed into heat, slowing the car in a controlled and predictable manner.

Fitting notes & recommended additional parts

• Fitting position: Front axle right (driver side – RHD)

• Brake system: LUCAS only (not suitable for ATE systems)

• Disc compatibility:

  • Vented discs

• Recommended when fitting:

  • New front brake pads (matched to 280mm discs)

  • Pad fitting kit / anti-rattle springs

  • New caliper carrier bolts (recommended if removed)

  • Brake fluid bleed after installation

For best results and balanced braking, it is strongly recommended to replace front brake calipers in pairs, even if only one side has failed.
