Baywindow Bus Front Brake Caliper Bundle Kit - 1971-72

This front right brake caliper is for early Baywindow front disc brake systems. It converts hydraulic brake pressure into the clamping force that presses the pads onto the front brake disc. This is a new caliper, supplied individually, for the right-hand side of the front axle.

It fits Volkswagen Type 2 Baywindow Bus models from 08/1970 to 07/1972, including Transporter T2 1.6 from 08/1970 to 07/1971. Fitting position is front axle right, which is the driver`s side on right-hand-drive vehicles.

This is the early Baywindow caliper design and it is not interchangeable with later 1973-1979 Baywindow calipers. The main identifying differences are the mounting bolt size and pad gap, so this is important when checking what is already fitted to your vehicle.

This left-hand front brake caliper is a correct replacement for early VW Baywindow buses built from August 1970 to July 1972. These early disc brake Baywindow models use a unique caliper specification that differs from later 1973-on vehicles, making correct identification essential when ordering.

This caliper fits the passenger side on RHD vehicles and is manufactured to match the original early Baywindow braking system for safe, predictable stopping performance.

How to identify the correct caliper

Early Baywindow front brake calipers can be easily identified by the following features:

• 12mm mounting bolts securing the caliper to the spindle

• 47mm brake pad gap

• Later Baywindow models use 14mm mounting bolts and a 55mm pad gap – this caliper will not fit those vehicles

If your vehicle has 12mm caliper mounting bolts and the narrower pad gap, this is the correct caliper.

What the part does & how it works

The brake caliper is a key component of the front disc braking system. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure forces the caliper piston to clamp the brake pads against the brake disc. This friction slows the rotation of the wheel, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop.

A worn or seized caliper can cause uneven braking, pulling to one side, overheating, or premature pad wear. Replacing a tired caliper restores proper braking balance, smooth pedal feel, and consistent stopping power.
