Beetle Front Brake Shoes - 1965-79 + Beetle Rear Brake Shoes - 1968-79

This ATE brake shoe set is a premium-quality replacement for classic aircooled Volkswagen drum brake systems. Manufactured by ATE, a leading OEM supplier to Volkswagen and Porsche, these shoes are built to exacting standards, offering excellent braking performance, durability and consistent friction characteristics. Supplied as a full set of four shoes, this kit covers both left and right sides for one axle (two brake drums).

Brake shoes are a vital part of the drum braking system. When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic pressure forces the shoes outward against the inside of the brake drum, creating friction to slow and stop the vehicle. Over time, the friction material wears down, reducing braking efficiency and increasing stopping distances. Replacing worn shoes with a trusted brand like ATE ensures safe, reliable braking performance.

These shoes measure 40mm wide by 230mm long and are correct for front fitment on most Beetles from August 1964 onwards (excluding 1302 and 1303 models which use different front shoes). They are also used on the rear of all Beetles from December 1967 onwards, including 1302 and 1303 models, along with Karmann Ghia rear applications and various Porsche models using compatible drum brake systems.

When fitting to the rear, these shoes are supplied without handbrake levers. Existing levers can be reused (may require drilling out rivets), or new parts can be fitted. Required fitting components include handbrake lever pins, clips and washers (211609601B, N0122283, 211609619). Replacement handbrake levers are also available (113609613A left and 113609614A right).

For best results, we recommend checking or replacing brake drums, wheel cylinders, return springs and fitting kits at the same time to ensure even braking and long service life.
