T5 Crankshaft Rear Main Oil Seal - 1.9 TDI (BRR,BRS Engines)

Rear main oil seal with integrated sealing ring and trigger wheel, fitted on the gearbox side of the engine. Often referred to as the crankshaft rear oil seal, this unit seals the rear of the crankshaft where it exits the engine block, preventing engine oil leaks into the bellhousing area. The integrated trigger wheel also provides the correct signal reference for engine management, so this is more than just a simple seal.

Made from PTFE, this seal is designed for low-friction running and long service life. When the rear main seal fails, common symptoms include oil leaks between the engine and gearbox, oil contamination around the bellhousing, clutch slip caused by oil on the friction plate, or repeat oil loss with no obvious leak from higher up the engine. As this seal includes the trigger wheel, correct installation is important and the seal should be fitted squarely using the proper procedure. Depending on model, gearbox removal is required. It is good practice to inspect the flywheel, clutch or drive plate bolts, and any mounting bolts or one-time-use fixings during replacement.
