2E3 Carburettor - DG Code 1900cc Waterboxer Engines

This high-quality replacement carburettor is designed as a direct alternative to the now obsolete Pierburg 2E3 unit, originally fitted to Volkswagen Type 25 / T3 models with the 1.9L Waterboxer DG engine. As original units become increasingly difficult to source or refurbish, this carburettor provides a practical and reliable solution for both restoration projects and daily-driven vehicles.

The carburettor is responsible for precisely mixing fuel and air before it enters the inlet manifold. On DG Waterboxer engines, correct carburation is critical for smooth idle, responsive acceleration, and reliable cold starting. Worn or incorrectly adjusted original carburettors commonly cause poor cold start performance, hesitation, stalling, and uneven running—particularly noticeable on heavier camper conversions.

This replacement unit closely follows the Pierburg 2E3 design but incorporates simplified fuel and vacuum arrangements. It is supplied fully assembled and ready to install, while still allowing reuse of original components where required.

Detailed Fitting & Installation Information

While designed as a direct replacement, installation is not always a simple “bolt-on” due to variations in vehicle setup:

Throttle Linkage

  • The supplied linkage is configured differently from the T25 setup
  • The original throttle linkage plate must typically be transferred from your existing carburettor
  • Fortunately, the shaft, flats, and cam alignment match, allowing a straightforward swap
  • Fast idle screw angle may differ but does not affect operation

Fuel System

  • Original Pierburg 2E3 uses a return fuel system (feed and return)
  • This replacement carburettor has a single fuel inlet only
  • The fuel return line must be blanked off or capped
  • Suitable for fuel pumps producing approx. 4–5 PSI (standard mechanical pump range)
  • Excess pressure can cause over-fuelling, so pump condition should be checked

Vacuum Connections

  • Original carburettor has rear-mounted vacuum ports
  • Replacement unit uses a front-mounted vacuum advance port
  • Vacuum hose length will need adjusting or shortening
  • Port size may differ slightly—flexible/silicone hose recommended for ease of fitment
  • Provides correct ported vacuum signal for distributor advance (often improves running over worn originals)

Mounting & Hardware

  • Supplied mounting studs are shorter than original T25 items
  • Original studs should be removed from the old carburettor and reused
  • Standard inlet manifold and mounting flange retained

Electrical Connections

  • Choke heater and idle cut-off valve wiring may differ
  • Supplied wiring includes a combined feed arrangement
  • Vehicles with separate wiring will require connector modification
  • Ensure correct polarity and insulated connections

Throttle Body Heating

  • Not supplied with heating element
  • Mounting port is blanked but can be drilled and tapped
  • Recommended for vehicles used in colder climates to prevent carb icing

Automatic Models

  • Original choke housing must be transferred for correct automatic gearbox operation

Additional Notes

  • Vapour separator fitted to carburettor may be removed if not required
  • Minor clearance adjustments may be needed on vehicles with power steering or air conditioning
  • Installation typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on setup and familiarity

Performance & Benefits

Once installed, this carburettor delivers noticeably improved drivability compared to worn originals:

  • Faster and more reliable cold starting
  • Stable idle without stalling or hunting
  • Smooth throttle response from cold
  • Correct vacuum signal for ignition advance
  • Reduced flat spots and hesitation

For many vehicles, this resolves long-standing issues caused by worn throttle shafts, incorrect vacuum signals, or ageing internal components in original Pierburg units.
