Type 25 Waterboxer Flywheel - 228mm

This forged 228mm Chromoly flywheel is designed to fit 1900cc and 2100cc petrol Waterboxer engines as used in VW Type 25 / T3 buses from 1983–1992, as well as the Brazil Kombi (2001). Manufactured from high-strength Chromoly steel, this flywheel offers exceptional durability while maintaining a lighter overall mass than standard cast alternatives.

The flywheel plays a critical role in engine operation by storing rotational energy from the crankshaft and providing a smooth, consistent surface for the clutch to engage. This forged Chromoly version improves strength and resistance to heat and stress, making it ideal for heavier vehicles like the T25/T3, as well as engines subjected to increased load or spirited driving. The reduced rotating mass helps the engine rev more freely, improving throttle response and acceleration without sacrificing drivability.

Designed specifically for 228mm clutch applications, this flywheel is a popular upgrade over earlier smaller flywheels. Early 1983 1.9 Waterboxer engines were originally fitted with a 215mm flywheel; upgrading to this 228mm unit requires fitting a matching 228mm clutch, resulting in improved torque handling and longer clutch life.

Precision machining ensures correct crankshaft mounting, clutch alignment, and starter engagement when installed correctly.

Fitting Notes & Compatibility

• Designed for 1.9L & 2.1L Waterboxer engines

• Early 1.9 engines (some 1983 models): originally 215mm – clutch upgrade required

• Can be fitted to 2.0L Type 4 engines when used with N90226801 flywheel bolts and tightened to the correct torque setting

• Break-in period: 500 miles required after installation
