Type 4 Heat Exchanger To Cylinder Head Gasket - 1972-78 (Oval Copper Ring Style)

This oval copper exhaust sealing ring is used on all Type 4 aircooled engines in 1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc capacities fitted to VW Baywindow Buses from 1972 to 1978. Its purpose is to seal the joint between the heat exchanger and the cylinder head, ensuring a gas-tight connection in one of the hottest and most critical areas of the engine.

The gasket sits between the heat exchanger outlet and the exhaust port in the cylinder head. When tightened, the soft copper material compresses evenly, creating a secure seal that prevents exhaust leaks, loss of back pressure, and hot gases escaping into the engine bay or heating system. A correctly sealed joint is essential for proper exhaust flow, efficient engine performance, and safe cabin heating.

Copper is used because of its excellent heat resistance and malleability. This allows the gasket to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressure cycles typical of air-cooled engines while still conforming to minor surface imperfections in the mating faces.
