G1 Gearbox Selector Shaft Gasket (020 Gearboxes)

This 020 gearbox selector shaft seal is designed to prevent gearbox oil leaks from the gear selector shaft where it enters the transmission casing. It is a vital sealing component on Volkswagen manual gearboxes fitted with the 020 transmission, ensuring gearbox oil remains inside the casing while allowing smooth movement of the selector shaft during gear changes.

The selector shaft moves every time a gear is selected, passing through the gearbox housing. This seal sits around the shaft and uses a precision-formed sealing lip to maintain constant contact as the shaft moves, preventing oil from escaping while keeping dirt and moisture out of the gearbox. Over time, the original seal can harden, wear, or split, leading to oil leaks around the gear linkage area and potential gearbox oil loss.

Common signs of a failed selector shaft seal include oil residue around the selector mechanism, drops of oil beneath the gearbox, or difficulty maintaining correct gearbox oil levels. Replacing this seal helps protect internal gearbox components such as bearings, synchros, and gears from premature wear caused by low lubrication.

This seal is also used on Brazilian Kombi and Mexican Beetle models from chassis number 118 2036 125 onwards, making it a versatile replacement part across multiple Volkswagen platforms.
