VW Karmann Ghia Gearbox Codes

The gearbox installed in the VW Karmann Ghia was the same as the VW Beetle.  It sits directly in front of the engine at the rear of the car and is supported at both the front and the rear by rubber mounts.

At the font of the gearbox is a single mount attached to the chassis of the car and the nosecone of the gearbox.  At the rear of the gearbox on either side of the bell-housing two more rubber mounts are located.

There were two styles of gearboxes fitted to the Karmann Ghia.  Pre 1970 Karmann Ghia’s were fitted with a Swing Axle gearbox and later models were fitted with IRS gearboxes.

Swing Axle gearboxes were originally fitted to the Karmann Ghia with either the 1200cc or 1300cc engine.  In August 1970 with the introduction of the 1600cc engine the new IRS gearbox was fitted.  A Semi-Automatic gearbox was also available from this year as an optional extra.
