Type 4 Cam Follower (Lifter) - Hydraulic - Top Quality

This Genuine Volkswagen hydraulic cam follower is the original factory-spec component designed for 1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc Type 4 aircooled engines fitted to late Baywindow buses, as well as 1600 CT engines and most watercooled engines used in Type 25 / T3 vans.

The cam follower is a critical part of the valve train, sitting directly between the camshaft lobe and the pushrod. As the camshaft rotates, the follower transfers this motion to open and close the engine valves. In hydraulic form, the follower uses engine oil pressure to automatically maintain correct valve clearance, eliminating the need for manual adjustment.

Inside the genuine hydraulic follower is a precisely machined plunger assembly retained by an internal circlip, allowing the follower to self-adjust as the engine warms and components expand. This results in quieter operation, smoother running, reduced valve train wear, and improved longevity compared to mechanical systems.

Being a Genuine Volkswagen part, this cam follower is manufactured to the exact materials, tolerances, and surface finishes specified by VW when these engines were new. This ensures correct oil control, reliable internal pressure, and proper interaction with the camshaft lobe—key factors in preventing premature cam and lifter wear, especially on higher-mileage or freshly rebuilt engines.

Hydraulic and mechanical valve train components must never be mixed. If your engine is equipped with hydraulic lifters, all followers must be hydraulic versions of the same type.
