Phosphate Coated Engle 28mm Cam Followers (Lifters) - Type 1 Engines

These Engle 28mm phosphate coated cam lifters are designed specifically for high-performance VW Type 1 aircooled engines, making them an essential upgrade when running high-lift or aggressive camshafts. The addition of a phosphate coating provides improved surface protection during initial start-up and cam break-in, helping to reduce friction and minimise the risk of premature cam or lifter wear.

Each lifter features a 28mm diameter head and weighs approximately 100 grams, offering an ideal balance between strength and controlled valvetrain mass. The larger lifter face spreads the load more evenly across the cam lobe, which is critical in high-lift applications where contact pressures are increased. This helps extend camshaft life and improves reliability in demanding road and competition engines.

The phosphate coating is particularly beneficial during the first moments of engine operation, when oil pressure has not yet fully built up. It provides a sacrificial lubricating layer that supports smooth bedding-in of the camshaft and lifters. Combined with correct assembly lubricant and proper break-in procedures, these lifters deliver excellent durability and consistent performance.
