This top-quality replacement rear brake drum is designed for all VW Splitscreen Buses from 1955 to 1963, retaining the correct wide 5 stud pattern (5×205 PCD) and original braking dimensions. It is also suitable for VW Trekkers fitted with reduction boxes, as originally used on models up to chassis number 183 2346 524.
Manufactured to original specification, this drum is ideal for restorations and standard road use where correct braking performance and factory appearance are essential.
The rear brake drum forms the rotating friction surface for the rear braking system. When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic pressure forces the brake shoes outward against the inside of the drum. The resulting friction slows the rotation of the rear wheels, providing controlled and balanced braking.
A correctly sized and true brake drum is critical on reduction-box vehicles, as the rear brakes do a significant amount of work. Worn or oval drums can cause grabbing, vibration, or reduced stopping power. This replacement drum restores the correct internal diameter and shoe contact area, ensuring smooth braking, predictable pedal feel, and even shoe wear.
Stud pattern: Wide 5 – 5×205 PCD
Internal diameter: 230mm
Drum depth: 49mm
Hub nut size: 36mm
Brake shoe compatibility:
For use with 40mm wide rear brake shoes as fitted to 1955–1963 models
Sold individually, but we always recommend replacing rear brake drums in pairs to avoid uneven braking and imbalance.
Before installation, clean the inner braking surface thoroughly with brake cleaner, as the drum is coated with an anti-oxidising oil during manufacture for corrosion protection.
Always inspect brake shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, and adjusters when fitting new drums, replacing any worn components at the same time.
Some 1963 Splitscreen Buses, particularly those originally supplied to the USA, were fitted with M-code 216 and a 1500cc engine. These vehicles use small axles with a 36mm hub nut, but were fitted with larger 45mm wide brake shoes.
Those models require a different rear brake drum (originally VW part number 211501615D) and this drum is not suitable for that configuration.
