Baywindow Bus Rear Brake Drum - 1971-79

This replacement rear brake drum is designed for all VW Baywindow Buses from 1971 to 1979, featuring the later 5×112 stud pattern as fitted from 1971 onwards. It is a direct replacement for worn or damaged original drums and is ideal for maintaining safe, reliable braking performance on late Baywindow models.

What the part does & how it works

The rear brake drum acts as the friction surface for the rear braking system. When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder forces the wheel cylinders to push the brake shoes outward so they contact the inner surface of the drum. This friction slows the rotation of the rear wheels, contributing significantly to the overall stopping power and stability of the vehicle.

A brake drum that is true to size and round is essential for smooth braking, consistent pedal feel, and even brake shoe wear. Over time, original drums can become worn, scored, or oval, leading to vibration, grabbing, or reduced braking efficiency. This replacement drum restores correct operation and dependable braking performance.

This drum is suitable for all late Baywindow models using the 5×112 wheel pattern and is not compatible with earlier wide-5 (5×205) setups.

Fitting notes & best practice

• Although sold individually, we strongly recommend replacing rear brake drums in pairs to prevent uneven braking and imbalance across the axle.

• Before installation, it is essential to thoroughly clean the inner braking surface with a good quality brake cleaner. The drum is coated during manufacture with an anti-oxidising oil to prevent corrosion in storage, and this must be completely removed before fitting.

• We also advise carrying out a full inspection of the braking system at the same time, including brake shoes, wheel cylinders, return springs, and adjusters, replacing any components that show signs of excessive wear or damage.
