Baywindow Bus Steering Damper (Also Splitscreen Bus Steering Damper - 1955-67)

High quality steering damper manufactured by Cofap, designed to fit VW Splitscreen and Baywindow buses. This unit is suitable for both left and right hand drive models and provides a reliable solution for restoring stable, controlled steering.

The steering damper (also known as a steering shock absorber) is fitted between the steering linkage and the front axle beam. Its job is to absorb sudden shocks and vibrations coming through the front wheels caused by bumps, potholes, or uneven road surfaces. Without a properly functioning damper, the steering can feel loose, twitchy, or prone to shimmy—especially at speed.

This Cofap unit helps stabilise the steering system by controlling rapid side-to-side movement in the steering linkage. The result is smoother steering feel, improved straight-line stability, and reduced driver fatigue—particularly important on classic VW buses with their front axle design.

Manufactured to high standards, this damper offers dependable performance for both daily driving and restoration projects. It is a direct replacement for original units, although please note it may not be suitable for vehicles fitted with narrowed front beams due to altered geometry and mounting positions.
