This steering box worm gear ball bearing is a high-quality replacement component for all Volkswagen Splitscreen (Type 2) and early Baywindow Buses built between March 1955 and July 1972. These precision ball bearings are used within the steering box worm gear assembly, allowing smooth, low-friction movement of the steering mechanism for accurate and consistent steering response.
Each steering box requires a total of 28 ball bearings — 14 per bearing race — to support both ends of the worm shaft. Over time, these bearings can wear, pit, or corrode due to age and lack of lubrication, leading to heavy or uneven steering. Replacing them is essential when rebuilding the steering box to restore precise control and eliminate play.
Manufactured to exact OEM dimensions, these bearings ensure a perfect fit within the steering box races and provide smooth rotational movement of the worm gear. They are supplied individually, allowing you to order only the quantity required for your rebuild.
