Splitscreen Bus Front Brake Drum - 1964-67 (64mm Hub Seal)

This replacement front brake drum is designed to suit all Volkswagen T2 Splitscreen Buses from September 1963 through to the end of production in 1967, retaining the original wide 5 stud pattern (5×205 PCD). It is a direct replacement for worn or damaged original drums and restores correct braking performance while maintaining factory specification for classic restorations.

What the part does & how it works

The front brake drum is a critical part of the braking system. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces the wheel cylinder to push the brake shoes outward against the inner surface of the drum. The friction created between the shoes and the rotating drum slows the wheel and brings the vehicle safely to a stop. A true, round braking surface is essential for smooth braking, even pedal feel, and consistent stopping power.

This drum is manufactured to original dimensions and specifications, ensuring the correct shoe contact area and heat dissipation during braking. Properly fitted, it helps prevent brake judder, pulling under braking, and premature shoe wear.

Compatibility & conversion use

• Splitscreen Buses (Sept 1963–1967):
  Direct fit using the original 64mm outer diameter hub seal.
  Correct hub seal for Splitscreen use: 211405641B

• Baywindow Buses (1968–1970):
  This drum can also be used on early Baywindow models when fitted with the correct conversion hub seal.
  Required conversion hub seal: 211405641E

This makes the drum ideal not only for Splitscreen restorations, but also for early Baywindow owners converting or maintaining wide-5 running gear.

Fitting notes

• Sold individually, but we strongly recommend replacing brake drums in pairs to avoid uneven braking and imbalance across the front axle.

• Before installation, clean the inner braking surface thoroughly with brake cleaner, as the drum is coated with an anti-oxidising oil during manufacture to prevent corrosion in storage.

• Always inspect brake shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, and adjusters when replacing drums, and renew any worn components at the same time for best results.
