G5,G6 Front Brake Caliper - Left (ATE)

This front left brake caliper is a single-piston ATE floating caliper designed for Volkswagen models fitted with vented front brake discs in 288mm or 312mm diameters. It is the most common caliper used across the Golf Mk5 and Mk6 platforms, offering strong, consistent braking performance and excellent reliability for everyday road use.

Featuring a 54mm piston, this caliper delivers the clamping force required for the heavier Mk5/Mk6 chassis and higher engine outputs, while maintaining smooth pedal feel and even pad wear.

Primary Fitment – Golf Mk5 & Mk6 (Front Axle)

This caliper is primarily fitted to VW Golf Mk5 and Mk6 models that were factory-equipped with 288mm or 312mm vented front discs.

VW Golf V (2003–2009)

  • Engines: 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 petrol

  • Diesels: 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI

VW Golf VI (2008–2016)

  • Engines: 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.5 petrol

  • Diesels: 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI

Not suitable for vehicles with smaller front brakes (e.g. 256mm) or larger performance systems unless specified. Always confirm disc diameter before ordering.

Why This Caliper Is Used on Mk5 & Mk6 Golf

The Mk5/Mk6 Golf platform introduced larger and more capable braking systems compared to earlier models. This ATE 54mm caliper works with vented discs to improve heat dissipation, reduce brake fade, and provide stable braking under repeated use—ideal for motorway driving, urban stop-start traffic, and heavier diesel models.

Other Compatible Volkswagen Models

This front right brake caliper is also used across a wide range of VW models sharing the same ATE front brake setup:

  • VW Beetle (5C) (2011–2019)

  • VW Caddy III (2004–2015)

  • VW Eos (2006–2015)

  • VW Golf Plus (2004–2014)

  • VW Jetta III & IV (2004–2018)

  • VW Passat B6 / B7 / CC (2005–2020)

  • VW Polo 6R (selected models, 2009–2022)

  • VW Scirocco III (2008–2017)

  • VW Touran I & II (2003–2015)

Brake specifications vary by engine, year, and market—always confirm disc size and caliper type.

How the Front Brake Caliper Works

When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure pushes the 54mm piston outward, forcing the brake pads against the vented disc. The floating caliper design allows equal pressure on both pads, ensuring efficient braking, reduced vibration, and even wear.

The vented disc compatibility helps manage heat buildup, maintaining braking performance during prolonged or heavy use.

RHD Fitment Notes

  • Fitting position: Front axle left

  • On right-hand-drive vehicles, this is the passenger side

Recommended Additional Parts

For best braking performance and safe installation, we recommend fitting:

  • New front brake pads

  • Matching vented front brake discs (288mm or 312mm as applicable)

  • New caliper carrier bolts (single-use on many models)

  • Brake pad wear sensor (if fitted)

Front brake calipers should always be replaced in axle pairs to maintain balanced braking.
