Type 1 Engine Thermostat

This aftermarket air flap thermostat is designed to regulate cooling air flow on all 1200cc to 1600cc upright VW aircooled engines, maintaining optimal engine temperature and performance. Though it differs in appearance from the original factory unit, it operates in the same functional way, offering a reliable and cost-effective replacement for worn-out or missing thermostats.

The thermostat mounts to the underside of the engine and connects via a rod to the cooling air flaps inside the fan shroud. When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains contracted, keeping the flaps closed to help the engine warm up quickly. As the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat expands, gradually opening the flaps to allow cold air in, thus preventing overheating and ensuring efficient operation.

Installation Note: To install this reproduction unit, modification to your existing thermostat bracket is required—specifically, a hole must be drilled to prevent the thermostat from rotating, ensuring that it fully opens during use. Please inspect your setup before fitting to confirm compatibility and necessary adjustments.
