040 Twin Port Cylinder Head - 1600cc (Bare Head, No Valves)

This bare twin port cylinder head is designed for Volkswagen 1600cc aircooled engines and is suitable for Beetle, Baywindow Bus, Karmann Ghia and Type 3 models. The cylinder head forms the top of the engine and contains the combustion chamber, valve seats and valve guides. Air and fuel enter through the intake ports while exhaust gases exit through the exhaust ports, with the valves opening and closing via the rocker gear and camshaft.

This head is supplied bare, meaning it includes valve guides and valve seats installed, but does not include valves, valve springs, retainers or collets, allowing you to build the head to your required specification. It uses 35.5mm inlet valves and 32mm exhaust valves, which is the standard size for 1600 twin port engines and provides good airflow and reliability for both standard and mild performance engines.

The head is manufactured from AA 500 series casting and features improved cooling fins and a modern combustion chamber design for improved airflow and cooling. It is designed to use long reach spark plugs such as W8CC or WR7CC, which helps reduce the chance of cracking between the valve seat and spark plug hole – a common issue on older heads. The head also includes a mounting hole for a temperature sensor on fuel injection models.

This head can also be used on engines up to 94mm bore depending on build specification.

When installing these heads, you will also require valves, valve springs, retainers, collets, rocker assemblies, pushrod tubes, head studs and a full engine gasket set.
