This 12 volt 70 amp alternator is a replacement charging unit for various Volkswagen petrol models fitted with a 50mm 6-rib auxiliary belt pulley. The alternator is driven by the engine via the auxiliary belt and provides electrical power to run the vehicle’s systems while also keeping the battery charged.
The alternator works by converting mechanical rotation from the engine into electrical current. This power is used to operate the ignition system, fuel system, lights, heater blower, wipers and other electrical components while driving. If the alternator begins to fail, common symptoms include the battery warning light staying on, dim headlights, flat battery, poor starting, or intermittent electrical faults. Replacing the alternator restores proper charging voltage and reliable operation.
Before installing, always check the pulley diameter, number of ribs, mounting points, electrical connections and amperage rating match the original unit. It is also recommended to inspect the auxiliary belt and belt tensioner when replacing the alternator, as worn belts or weak tensioners can cause charging problems or belt noise.
