This hydraulic release bearing, also known as a concentric slave cylinder (CSC), is designed for VW T4 Transporter models fitted with 2.5 TDI and 2.8 VR6 engines from 1996 to 2003. Unlike traditional clutch setups that use a fork and external slave cylinder, this unit sits inside the bellhousing, mounted directly around the gearbox input shaft.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder acts directly on the release bearing. This provides smooth, even pressure to the clutch pressure plate, improving pedal feel and reducing mechanical wear. Because it operates inside the gearbox bellhousing, any failure requires gearbox removal, making replacement during clutch work absolutely essential.
