T4,T5,G2,G3,G4 Clutch Release Bearing Guide

The clutch release bearing guide sleeve (also known as the guide tube) is a critical but often overlooked component inside the bellhousing. It mounts to the gearbox casing and provides a smooth, perfectly aligned surface for the clutch release bearing to slide on as the clutch pedal is pressed and released.

Over time, these sleeves wear, corrode, or score. When that happens, the release bearing can bind or run rough, leading to heavy pedal feel, inconsistent clutch engagement, squealing noises, or premature failure of a new clutch kit. Replacing the guide sleeve during a clutch change is cheap insurance and strongly recommended whenever the gearbox is removed.

This guide sleeve is designed to fit all applicable VW manual gearboxes that use a conventional release bearing, excluding transmissions fitted with a hydraulic (concentric) release bearing.

What this part does

  • Keeps the clutch release bearing perfectly aligned with the pressure plate

  • Allows smooth sliding movement during clutch operation

  • Prevents clutch judder, pedal vibration, and bearing noise

  • Protects new release bearings from uneven wear or seizure

Fitting notes & recommendations

  • Always replace the guide sleeve when fitting a new clutch release bearing or full clutch kit

  • Lightly grease the sleeve with high-temperature clutch grease (do not over-grease)

  • Inspect the clutch fork, pivot pin, retaining clip, and input shaft seal while accessible

  • Not suitable for gearboxes with hydraulic concentric slave/release bearings (CSC)
