This oil deflector plate is designed for Volkswagen 4-cylinder water-cooled engines, primarily 1.6–1.8 litre units (excluding 16V), and is used across a wide range of VW models including Golf Mk1, Golf Mk2, and Transporter T4.

The oil deflector plays a critical but often overlooked role inside the engine. It is positioned to control oil splash and return, preventing excessive oil from being thrown up into the crankcase ventilation system while ensuring proper drainage back to the sump. When missing, damaged or incorrectly fitted, engines can suffer from increased oil consumption, oil being drawn into the intake, and unstable crankcase breathing.

Manufactured to original specification, this deflector restores correct oil control and is ideal when rebuilding engines, replacing worn internal components, or correcting oil misting and breather-related issues.

How it works

As the crankshaft rotates, oil is thrown around the crankcase. The oil deflector shields sensitive areas and directs oil away from the breather system, allowing vapour separation while ensuring liquid oil drains back into the sump. This helps maintain correct oil pressure, reduces oil carry-over, and improves long-term engine cleanliness.
