228mm Clutch Disc - 2000cc Type 4 Engines, Waterboxer Engines

This 228mm diameter clutch friction plate is a quality replacement designed for Volkswagen Baywindow and Type 25 / T3 models fitted with 2000cc Type 4 aircooled engines and 1900cc or 2100cc Waterboxer engines. It forms a key part of the clutch assembly, transmitting engine power to the gearbox while allowing smooth engagement and disengagement during gear changes.

The friction plate sits between the clutch pressure plate and the flywheel. When the clutch pedal is released, the pressure plate clamps the friction plate against the flywheel, transferring drive from the engine to the transmission. Depressing the clutch pedal releases this pressure, allowing gears to be changed smoothly. Over time, clutch discs wear due to friction and heat, leading to slipping, judder, or difficulty selecting gears—clear signs that replacement is required.

Manufactured to the correct 228mm specification, this friction plate restores proper clutch operation and is ideal for routine clutch overhauls, gearbox removal work, or engine rebuilds.

Important fitment note

Some early Waterboxer engines were fitted with smaller 215mm clutch assemblies.

How it works

The friction material bonded to the plate grips the flywheel when engaged, allowing engine torque to be transmitted to the gearbox. When disengaged, it separates cleanly to interrupt drive, enabling smooth gear changes without drivetrain shock.
