Waterboxer Pushrod Tube Guard (under Head Tin) - Right

This Genuine Volkswagen pushrod tube guard (right side / drivers side on RHD models) is the factory-style protective shield that sits under the cylinder head tin, underneath the engine on the right-hand side of all 1900cc and 2100cc Waterboxer engines fitted to Type 25 / T3 buses (1983–1992).

On a Waterboxer, the pushrod tubes run along the underside of each cylinder head and carry the pushrods between the cam followers and rocker gear. Because these tubes sit low and close to heat sources, road spray, and debris, VW fitted a dedicated guard/heat shield to help protect this area. This panel helps in three key ways:

  • Heat shielding: It reduces direct radiant heat exposure to the pushrod tube area from nearby exhaust components and hot airflow, helping maintain more stable operating conditions around the tubes and seals.

  • Physical protection: It acts as a barrier against stones, grit, and road debris that can dent pushrod tubes or damage surrounding tinware and seals.

  • Cleaner airflow and better sealing: Fitted correctly under the head tin, it helps keep the underside tin arrangement complete, supporting the engine’s designed airflow routing and keeping dirt from being forced into gaps.

If your original guard is missing, bent, or corroded, replacing it is a simple but worthwhile step—especially on restored or well-used T25/T3s—because it helps preserve the pushrod tube area and keeps the factory under-engine tinwork doing its job.

Depending on what’s been removed previously or how far you’re stripping the tinware, you may also want to inspect related under-head tin screws/clips and any surrounding tin sections for damage so everything mounts tight and lines up correctly.
