Type 4 Cam Follower (Lifter) - Hydraulic (Also Used on Waterboxer + CT Engines)

This hydraulic cam follower (also known as a hydraulic tappet or lifter) is designed for 1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc Type 4 aircooled engines as fitted to late Baywindow buses, as well as 1600 CT engines and most watercooled engines used in Type 25 / T3 vans.

The cam follower sits between the camshaft lobe and the pushrod, transferring the camshaft’s movement into linear motion that opens and closes the valves. Unlike manual (mechanical) followers, this hydraulic version automatically compensates for valve clearance using engine oil pressure. Inside the follower body is a spring-loaded plunger and oil chamber that expands to remove lash in the valve train, resulting in quieter operation, reduced wear, and less maintenance.

Hydraulic cam followers are easily identified by the internal circlip, which retains the hydraulic plunger assembly. Manual or mechanical followers do not have this circlip. Using the correct follower type is critical—hydraulic and mechanical components must never be mixed within the same engine.

This cam follower is manufactured to high-quality standards, ensuring proper oil control, consistent internal pressure, and smooth contact with the camshaft lobe. Correct operation helps protect the camshaft, pushrods, and valves while improving long-term engine reliability and drivability—especially important in heavier vans where smooth torque delivery matters.
