Oil Pressure Switch - All Aircooled Engines

This oil pressure switch controls the oil warning light in the speedometer, alerting you when engine oil pressure drops below safe operating levels. It is a vital safety component on all classic aircooled Volkswagen engines, helping to warn of potential oil pressure loss before serious engine damage occurs.

What it does and how it works

The switch monitors engine oil pressure and operates the dashboard warning light via a single 1-pin terminal. When oil pressure falls below its operating threshold, the internal contacts close and complete the circuit, illuminating the warning light. As oil pressure rises above the safe limit, the circuit opens and the light switches off.

This switch is calibrated to operate between 0.15 and 0.45 bar, making it suitable for standard factory oil pressure warning systems used across a wide range of aircooled VW engines.

Location

  • Type 1 engines:
Located on the left hand side (passenger side on RHD vehicles) of the crankcase, just behind the distributor.

  • Type 4 engines (late Baywindow & early Type 25 / T3):
Located off the edge of the oil cooler housing.

Features

  • Correct oil pressure range: 0.15 – 0.45 bar

  • Single pin terminal for warning light connection

  • Tapered thread to suit M10 x 1.0mm crankcase thread

  • Good quality reproduction, ideal for maintenance or restoration

Fitting notes and related parts

  • Screws into an M10 x 1.0mm threaded oil gallery

  • Do not overtighten – excessive torque can crack the crankcase

  • Ensure the terminal connection is clean and secure
