Type 4 Fanshroud Air Flaps

This pair of lower fan shroud air flaps is fitted to all Volkswagen Type 4 aircooled engines with capacities of 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc. These metal flaps are mounted within the lower engine tinware and form a critical part of the factory-designed cooling and warm-up system.

When the engine is cold, the air flaps remain closed, restricting airflow from the cooling fan. This allows the engine to warm up more quickly, reducing internal wear, improving oil circulation, and helping the engine reach its optimum operating temperature faster. As the engine temperature rises, the thermostat system gradually opens the flaps, allowing cooling air to flow fully over the cylinders and heads.

Once open, the flaps ensure that cooling air is distributed correctly across the engine, preventing hot spots and maintaining stable operating temperatures. Missing, seized, or incorrectly fitted air flaps can lead to slow warm-up times, increased engine wear, uneven cooling, and reduced engine efficiency.
