This oil dipstick bellows boot was originally designed for Volkswagen Type 4 aircooled engines fitted to late Baywindow Buses with 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc engines. However, in practice it has proven to be a highly effective universal solution and can also be fitted to Type 1 engine cases using either stock or aftermarket dipsticks.
The purpose of the dipstick boot is simple but essential: it seals the dipstick tube where it passes through the engine tin or crankcase, keeping oil inside the engine while preventing dirt, dust, and road debris from entering. A properly sealed dipstick tube helps maintain correct crankcase cleanliness and reduces the risk of oil contamination.
Over time, original dipstick boots often become hard, brittle, and cracked due to prolonged exposure to heat and oil vapour. Once hardened, they are easily torn during dipstick removal, leading to oil leaks, misting around the engine bay, and dirt being drawn into the engine. From experience, this is a very common issue on older aircooled Volkswagens.
This replacement dipstick bellows is manufactured from nitrile butyl rubber, a material chosen for its resistance to oil, heat, and ageing. The flexible bellows design allows for engine movement while maintaining a consistent seal, making it suitable for both standard and modified engines.
Thanks to its adaptable design, this boot can be installed on a wide range of aircooled Volkswagen engines and vehicles, making it an ideal choice whether you are restoring a classic, maintaining a daily driver, or building a buggy or Baja.
