This cooling fan hub O-ring is designed for all Volkswagen Type 4 aircooled engines with capacities from 1700cc to 2000cc. It fits engines installed in late Baywindow vans from 1973 to 1979 and aircooled Type 25 (T3) vans up to 1983, as well as Porsche 914 Type 4 applications.
The O-ring fits into the cooling fan hub and seals the hub to the crankshaft area. Its primary role is to prevent oil mist and leaks from escaping through the fan hub while the engine is running. On Type 4 engines, maintaining proper sealing at the fan hub is essential, as oil contamination inside the cooling system can attract dirt, reduce cooling efficiency, and lead to premature wear of surrounding components.
Over time, the original O-ring can harden, shrink, or crack due to heat and age. When this happens, oil leaks may develop around the fan hub, often visible as oil residue inside the fan housing or on the rear of the engine. Replacing the O-ring during engine maintenance, fan removal, or rebuild work helps restore correct sealing and keeps the cooling system clean and efficient.
