Type 4 Pushrod Tube Retaining Wire

This replacement pushrod tube retaining wire, also known as the pushrod tube spring, is designed for Volkswagen Type 4 air-cooled engines in 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc form. It is fitted to Baywindow Buses and early Type 25 (T3) Buses equipped with air-cooled Type 4 engines, and is also suitable for Porsche 914 models.

Unlike Type 1 engines, Type 4 engines rely on a spring system to hold the pushrod tubes securely in position. This retaining wire hooks onto the rocker shaft, while its four formed “fingers” apply pressure to the pushrod tubes, ensuring they remain correctly seated in the cylinder head and crankcase.

A missing, weakened, or incorrectly fitted retaining wire can allow pushrod tubes to move during engine operation. This movement can quickly compromise the pushrod tube seals, leading to persistent oil leaks and contamination of the engine exterior. Replacing tired or missing retaining wires is essential during engine rebuilds, pushrod tube replacement, or oil leak repairs.

Manufactured to correct shape and spring tension, this retaining wire ensures proper alignment and secure positioning of the pushrod tubes, helping maintain leak-free operation and long-term engine reliability.

These retaining wires are sold individually, with two required per engine.
