Type 4 Cam Follower (Lifter) - Mechanical

This manual (mechanical) cam follower, also known as a lifter or tappet, is designed for Volkswagen Type 4 “pancake” air-cooled engines in 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc form. It is suitable for Baywindow Buses, air-cooled Type 25 (T3) Buses, and Porsche 914 models that are equipped with mechanical (solid) lifter camshafts.

The cam follower sits between the camshaft lobe and the pushrod, transferring the camshaft’s motion into linear movement that opens and closes the valves. Manual cam followers require periodic valve clearance adjustment but offer simplicity, reliability, and precise valve control—making them a popular choice for standard rebuilds and performance applications.

Manufactured to a precision fit, this cam follower ensures correct contact with the camshaft lobe, promoting smooth operation and reducing wear. Its durable construction allows it to withstand the demands of high-temperature, high-load air-cooled engines. Important Fitting Note:

• Manual (mechanical) cam followers do NOT have an internal circlip

• Hydraulic versions DO have a circlip and are a different part
